Mental Health Wellbeing policy

Millwall Rugby Club wants to foster a culture that promotes and supports the mental health and wellbeing of all members.

Mental wellbeing

Promoting mental wellbeing by: 

  • Providing information and raising awareness of mental health issues 

  • Promoting policies and actions that support mental wellbeing within the club

  • Equipping members and associates with the skills to support their own mental health 

Physical wellbeing

Encouraging physical health by: 

  • Promoting physical activity across the club and throughout the year

  • Supporting a healthy, balanced diet.

  • Encouraging appropriate hydration. 

Management and leadership

  • Equipping committee members and instating a Welfare Officer(s) with the skills to: Assist those with mental ill health and signpost them to appropriate services and support 

  • Utilising the Role of Welfare Officer(s) to act as a point of contact for members struggling with their mental, physical or social wellbeing and signpost to appropriate support services. 

  • Raising awareness of mental and physical wellbeing across the Club.  

Support for Members

Offering support to members by: 

  • Creating a culture that supports the wellbeing of all members and associates of the Club 

  • Offering help, support, and guidance to those with mental health issues to help ensure they reach appropriate support services. 

  • Supporting those returning to the Club and/or play after a period of mental ill health or physical health

Objectives

To create a supportive club culture, tackle factors that may have a negative impact on mental health, and ensure committee members have the right skills to support players 

  • Give members information on mental health issues to help raise awareness 

  • Deliver non-judgemental support to any player or member experiencing a mental health issue 

  • Give all members access to the mental health policy

  • Provide ways for players to support their own mental wellbeing, for example through exercise and social events.

  • Deal with any conflict quickly through the use of Welfare Officer(s) and committee members to ensure the club is free from bullying, harassment, racism, or discrimination 

  • Ensure good communication between members, coaches, committee members, and Welfare Officer(s)

To offer support and guidance for any member who is experiencing mental health issues

  • Check how the organisation of Millwall Rugby Club and Club conditions have an effect on mental health and wellbeing 

  • Ensure members with mental health issues are treated fairly and without judgement

  • Encourage members to talk to a counsellor, GP, Crisis Line, charity, or other appropriate organisation to receive appropriate holistic support.  

  • Treat all matters relating to Member’s mental ill health as confidential and only share information with prior consent from the individual concerned, except in the instances where there is believed risk to the individual or another person experiencing immediate risk or harm.

To raise awareness of the importance of physical activity for managing stress and maintaining mental wellbeing

  • Promote the importance of physical activity through discussion and social media posts 

  • Encourage adherence to the physical activity guidelines outlined by NHS England 

Raise awareness on the importance of leading a balanced lifestyle and its impact on physical and mental health 

  • Provide access to taps to ensure members can drink an adequate amount of water 

  • Raise awareness of the impacts of playing and training and dehydration 

  • Encourage a balanced diet 

Communication

All members will be made aware of the Millwall Rugby Club mental health and wellbeing policy - and the resources that are available to them.

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Policy will be made available on the Club website. 

Welfare Officer(s) will be established to ensure the policy actions are implemented across the Club. 

Reviewing and monitoring

The Welfare Officer(s) will be responsible for reviewing the health and wellbeing policy in conjunction with the Committee 

The policy’s effectiveness can be measured through the: 

  • Feedback from Members

  • Feedback from the Welfare Officer(s) 

  • Feedback from the Committee 

To ensure it stays relevant, the policy will continue to be reviewed.
