This is not simply another dull AGM - Millwall AGM's are usually very well attended and a chance for the players to voice their opinions on the past year and to elect new officers to guide the club through the coming season. Those present will also be able to vote for the "Players Player of the Year" and other trophies to be presented at the House of Commons Dinner the following day.

RUGBY REPORTS 3rd MAY 2008.

MALTA INTERNATIONAL CLUBS TOURNAMENT.

The first day of the Group stage of the Malta International Clubs Tournament 2008 took place at Marsa. The MICT is fast becoming an attractive international event with the standard of competing clubs improving year by year.

This year Millwall RFC, Battersea Ironsides RFC, Wimbledon RFC, UCS Old Boys RFC, and Old Alleynians RFC, all from London took on Ragusa RFC from Sicily and Spartans, a scratch side from Malta.

MILLWALL 19 vs SPARTANS 0
The Maltese side was disappointing but this was the first time the squad had played as a team. Millwall had almost constant possession for the first quarter and just when Spartans began to pull teamwork together, Smith burst through a pathetic tackle to score easily. The second half was similar, equally fought until Smith ran through weak tackles to score again. A final try was scored after heavy forward pressure.

BATTERSEA 5 vs WIMBLEDON 14
A hard battle, a "local derby" between two neighbours, away in Malta, but with some Stompers playing for Wimbledon, the home club of their previous coach Leon Wynne. Simmons (after a fine break by Stomper Malcolm Attard) and Jones scored tries for Wimbledon, converted by Croke, and Milnes scored for Battersea. This match was more attractive with better running skills.

RAGUSA 7 vs OLD ALLEYNIANS 29.
Old Alleynians returned to Malta after being runners up two years ago and immediately posted an intention of winning this year, punishing Ragusa with power play and good offloads and support. Ragusa can turn on a fine flowing, running and support game but were knocked out of their stride by the hard hitting O.A's. Woodford, Thomas, McEntee, Pfizen(2) scored tries , two of which were converted. Ragusa scored a good converted try in the closing seconds as they regained a little confidence.

WIMBLEDON 12 vs UCS 19
UCS were a little lucky to take this one, when the first converted try was scored after a superb twisting run by Hines, but which seemed to be started after a knock on, missed by the referee. They followed this up with two superb individual breaks by Turner to score tries, one of which was converted. Then Wimbledon hit back with a Cheese-Wire breakaway for a good converted try, followed by another try by Crooke

MILLWALL 27 vs RAGUSA 0
Again the Sicilians were unable to cope with the English power play and launch their renowned flowing support rugby. They tackled valiantly but could not hold the forward drives and mauls from which Millwall launched their backs. Williams (2), Bates, Webb and Docker scored tries, one of which was converted.

SPARTANS 0 vs OLD ALLEYNIANS 19.
The first half was very even, with Spartans finally gelling together and they were a little unlucky to end 0-7 behind, although the strong O.A's had a constantly threatening backline of powerful and speedy runners. In the second half they eased out to a comfortable win and look favourites for the title.

BATTERSEA 5 vs UCS 5
A very close fought game which result saw UCS top their pool for the knockouts tomorrow Sunday.

The knockout session will start at 1.30 pm at Marsa.

A very entertaining and enjoyable day out for rugby fans and participant clubs, as yet again the MRFU earn good hard currency for the Maltese economy and boost sports tourism, in the process of having a superb, popular and enjoyable time - the very essence of Rugby Tours and the sport of Rugby world wide.

RUGBY REPORT MALTA INTERNATIONAL CLUBS TOURNAMENT.

FINAL DAY.

As the tournament continued the standard of rugby improved to culminate in an excellent final.
In the lower pool, Battersea beat Spartans 12 - 0 in a well-matched game, in which Mifsud-Bonnici starred for Spartans, then beat Ragusa 5-0 with a try late in the game.
Ragusa beat a much-changed Spartans 22-0, being allowed the space to play the quick handling support style they enjoy.

The upper pool was closely and fiercely contested by four teams who really wanted to win.

Old Alleynians scraped past Wimbledon 7-0 into the final, thanks to a really lucky bounce from a speculative kick which went back, away from the covering full back straight into the arms of their speedster, Pfizen, who was unstoppable. O.A's had enjoyed territorial advantage but could not penetrate a determined defence, and Wimbledon lacked the pace to score from distance.

There followed a close match between Millwall and UCS in which UCS took the lead with a well worked try by Whitehouse and looked dangerous for much of the first half. However Millwall upped a gear in the second half and began to exert real pressure with hard driving forward play and quick releases. First Bond crashed through off the back of a maul, then a superb team effort with crisp passing put Robinson in for the winner, and Millwall were in the final by 10 - 5.

MALTA INTERNATIONAL CLUBS TOURNAMENT FINAL

OLD ALLEYNIANS RFC 0 vs MILLWALL RFC 22

Referee Sr Simone Colantonio, Italy.

Both teams wanted this trophy, and were out warming up and practicing long before kick off, but from the start Millwall imposed their terms on the play. They had obviously watched the potential danger from the O/A's backs throughout the tournament and used their powerful forwards to good effect, in starving them of good possession. When O.A's did manage a running attack the tackling and cover were able to stop them.

Millwall forwards used their strength to gain territorial advantage with charges and recycling again and again and "Crazy Horse" Fleming opened the score with a fine number eight try off the maul.
Both sides were playing good support, run and offload rugby which is so pleasing for the spectators and for the players, but Millwall kept the edge with possession. Next try for Millwall was a beautifully worked try with back, recycling and offloads until Smith broke the defence with a timed, perfectly angled burst.

O.A's would not give up their backs and pack combined well to launch some attacks before half time.
In the second half Millwall scented a good win and played tight percentage rugby to slowly build their domination. Their first try was the result of a series of driving mauls and rucks, until a finely timed quick release wide saw Smith in for his second try.

The second try came after a long period of quick handling and short driving when prop forward Nochman crowned a good team performance by burrowing over.

Referee Sr. Colantonio from Italy, controlled the match well.

All in all a fitting climax to an enjoyable rugby festa, which was continued well into Monday morning at Fuego, Paceville, in true rugby tradition.
