Have you been selected?

Without club administrators, physios, coaches and minibus drivers, to name just a few, rugby would not be the amazing game it is. You don't have to be 'sporty' to be a rugby volunteer because there are opportunities for everyone to give time. Whatever skills you can offer - be it feeding the players, promoting the club, raising funds, improving facilities, or anything else - Millwall Rugby Club would be delighted to welcome you.

Mike Costin has been appointed as Millwall's first "Volunteer Co-ordinator" with the aim of getting many more people within the club to contribute just a little to running and growing our great club.

We are contacting all the players - past and present - as well as friends and Social Members and asking "What can you do for the club?"

If you want to answer that question now - complete our online questionnaire by clicking here.

As well as recording what work or other specialisms each of us can offer, we will also be trying to record how much time and effort each person puts in. We have signed up to the RFU's "Valuing the Volunteer" campaign and we plan to give credit where its due - we have tentative plans for recognition on the clubhouse walls, in the form of "Club Tokens" exchangable at the Club Shop (or perhaps over the bar) or in reduced membership or event fees.

There are lots of small tasks that we already know we need help with - please take a look down the list below to see what you could do. But don't stop there - volunteering is about making a difference, so you need to actually contact Mike on volunteer@millwallrugby.com to offer your help!

Task title Date request added to list Brief Description of Task Number of Volunteers needed Starting when? Until when ? How much time will I need? Who will I report to?

You could even volunteer to help Mike work out how to value the other volunteers!

To suggest tasks that need volunteers, committee members and others holding positions in the club should fill in the form at the bottom of this page. After vetting, the task details will be added to the table of tasks (above).

How do I become a rugby volunteer? How do I find out more about volunteering within rugby?

There are a wide variety of opportunities for people of all ages who want to get involved in rugby. No matter what your background, whether or not you play rugby, whether you understand the game, you could be a rugby volunteer. Opportunities range from groundsman, to secretary, to PR & Marketing, to orange peeler. Rugby is a sport for all people of all ages.

Remember, don’t wait to be asked to Volunteer!

How much time will volunteering take up?

Volunteering will take up as much or as little time as you would like to give, but it is always advisable to agree some Terms of Reference, as this will help ensure that your time is as effective as possible.

What are the benefits for me?

As a MillwallRugby Volunteer you will:

Learn new skills and improve areas of personal ability, such as communication, leadership, organisation and life experience.

Build confidence and develop active community citizenship.

Gain a real sense of achievement in an internationally successful sport.

Encounter new experiences and job opportunities (developing your CV)

Keep your mind and body active through different volunteer roles.

Have opportunities to gain experience and/or awards in sport.

Do I get expenses?

Guidelines for what to give as ‘reasonable expenses’ can be found in the RFU Regulations & Competitions Handbook, but in simple terms, no-one should be out of pocket through volunteering.

How can the RFU support me as a Volunteer?

From the executive staff at head office, your local Rugby Development Officer and your Constituent Body, there are a variety of people who are close at hand to help support rugby clubs and volunteers.

What do I do if I’m unhappy with any aspect of volunteering?

We want all our volunteers to be happy in their role. Therefore, if you are unhappy with your role or any aspect of volunteering at Millwall, we advise you to discuss this in confidence with the Club Volunteer Co-ordinator or Chairman. If, however, you are still unhappy, and would like to make a formal complaint, about the club, someone within the club or at the RFU, please write to your CB Disciplinary Officer. Contact details can be found in the RFU Handbook.

How long should I stay in my role?

There is no fixed period for how long you should stay in the same role, however, we aim to review all roles on an annual basis.
