Pitch on the Park - formal response to our Petition
As you may recall, Wednesday 22nd
April saw the club present its petition to the full council meeting.
We were very well received, with no opposition in the room and some
councillors finding it hard to believe we aren't already allowed
on the Millwall Park pitch. As expected, these things are rarely
decided "on the night" and we were told to expect their
response "within the set 28 days".
I don't think it will surprise anyone that the response was late
arriving! It says "yes - in principle" and also confirms
that there is enough room for a full sized pitch without impacting
on the other (football) pitches. Unfortunately, it confuses Saturdays
and Sundays and says the changing rooms are fully booked on Sundays
so we can't use the pitch then!!! We are working to correct this
misunderstanding and hope to be able to complete the good news before
too long.
You can read the actual response letter (as a pdf) here.
Summer Touch Rugby

This year's Summer touch rugby sessions
will welcome men, women, boys and girls of all ages.
Our regular summer "Touch Rugby" sessions are back, taking
place on Monday & Wednesday evenings - every week from now until at least mid-July. We also play on Sunday afternoons all year round.
Boys and girls touch rugby starts on Mondays & Wednesdays at
6pm, finishing around 7.15pm. For those over 14, and all adults,
the sessions start at 7.15pm and continue, light dependent, until
just after 9pm when we hope you will join us for a cold drink in
our clubhouse. Check opening times.
All the sessions, including Sunday afternoons, are open to everyone
- just turn up and join in. They are also completely
free !
About touch rugby
Touch rugby is a non-contact form of rugby, where tackles are made
just by touching another player, who must then pass the ball. Kicking is not allowed nor is aggressive play.
Its
easy to pick up and played with mixed teams in a relaxed fun atmosphere,
so don't worry if the game is new to you or if you aren't yet very
fit. Come join us and try it out. let us know if you are new to the game so we can explain the rules to you.
Cup Finals, Promotions and Celebrations
Millwall’s 1st XV swept aside
higher division opponents to claim the prestigious Essex President’s
Shield by beating Thames 52 points to 20.
This victory sealed an historic treble, as the 1st XV has also
collected both the Essex League Cup and also been crowned Champions
of Essex division 2.
The previous day, the Millwall Llamas
(2nd XV) breezed past arch-rivals Bancrofts to win
their own BL Divisional Cup by 40 points to 12. This completed their
own ‘double’, having finished their own league programme
as Champions, securing promotion to BL Division 2 for next season.
Whilst our 3rd XV
didn’t quite win their own division (BL 6), finishing in 3rd
place has won them promotion to BL Division 5 for next season.
Not to be outdone, this season has been outstanding for our newest
adult side, the 4th XV, who have played more games this season than
ever before.
On Saturday 25th
saw our largest ever club rugby festival, including games for each
of our youth sides and the historic “England v Rest of the
World” game, which was as fiercely fought as always, with
the Rest of the World team victorious - but only just - running
out 15 - 12 winners. The Venus team are very much "on the up"
again and put in a sparkling display scoring three fine tries and
playing some really good rugby. The u17s team had the Coaches worried
throughout the 1st half of their game, but experience (not to mention
skill, ability, pace, guile, handsomeness and a host of other qualities)
won through in the end. Refreshments and the BBQ went on to dusk
and then the fun moved across into the clubhouse!
Sunday 26th
saw the Clubhouse open for the London Marathon for the first time.
As usual we held a bucket collection to raise money for Mudchute
Park & Farm, who provide the club with our training facilities
throughout the year, so come along and help on the day. The clubhouse
was busy throughout the day and the afternoon saw touch rugby in
the sun on Millwall Park.
30 club members are headed off to Slovenia on rugby tour over the
MayDay Bank Holiday weekend.
Thanks to everyone who supported any of our tour events –
look out for another fabulous quiz towards the end of May!
Saturday 2nd May
saw the 2nd annual WAGS and Venus pub crawl - also known as the
anti tour pub crawl. This was a really good opportunity for some
of the WAGs to get to know some of the other members of the club
while their blokes were away.
Saturday 9th May
started at the Clubhouse
with the club AGM debating the hot topics and electing new committee
members to run the club through next season. For the first time,
newly elected members will have a couple of months to 'shadow' current
committee members before taking over for real on August 1st.

Into the early evening, around 150 club members and guests got
dressed up for our Annual Dinner at
the hugely impressive Palace of Westminster (the
proper name for the House of Commons building), hosted by Jim Fitzpatrick
MP.
